1940 – 1981
There are many photographs, postcards and fond memories of the Humber Ferries running between Hull’s Corporation Pier to New Holland Pier, which connected communities, north and south of the estuary, before the Humber Bridge opened to connect counties.
The photographs in the gallery below are previously unpublished and I’ve reprocessed and restored them from original colour slides, negatives and glass plates. The wonderful thing about these is that most of them are labelled and with the date that they were taken. They start in 1940 with a lovely glass plate of a brand new out the box Lincoln Castle 1st Class No Smoking Lounge and end in April 1981, a couple of months before the Humber Bridge opened to traffic.
The original labels and dates are provided as captions below the images.

Here is Gary Saunt’s painting entitled Hull Fair featuring Corporation Pier and the Lincoln Castle which accompanies Gary’s comment below.

Loverly pics, really familiar feel to them. Both mine and Jan’s families lived on both sides of the river so the ferry seemed part of our lives at times.
