34 Jack Pell – Iron Bridges

Jack Pell – Iron Bridges

“These sculptures depict six of Hull’s cast-iron bridges, two of which are no longer in existence. The inspiration to make sculptures from the bridges came from sitting in the back of the car on the way to my Dad’s work (he worked as a printer in Wincolmlee), I was always mesmerised by the Wilmington Bridge. I created maquettes for the sculptures, then 3D scanned and printed them. I then sprayed them with automotive paint to resemble customised cars. The works are a playful re-visualisation of the familiar industrial structures, while celebrating a particularly colourful manifestation of working-class culture, which thrives in the old industrial areas of Sculcoates and Wincolmlee”. “Epochs continue to collide in a series of six shoebox-sized sculptures depicting Hull’s cast-iron bridges, including two now-demolished structures. To those familiar with the area, these 3D models are instantly recognisable, though reconceptualised with vibrant automotive paint and LEDs. Pell transforms the rigidity and coldness of these industrial structures to resemble customised cars with underglow lighting. Here, the familiarity and knowledge of one’s hometown – even of the very structures beneath our feet – is presented as in a state of flux.” – Megan Jones: Byland’s Super Saga – review, Corridoor8, 01.06.2024
