The Limmer and Trinidad Lake Asphalt Company, Sutton Road and Bridge c1965
This remarkable set of photographs show road surface and bridge repairs and views from the bridge taken by an interested resident, circa 1965.
The asphalt is being laid by the Limmer and Trinidad Lake Asphalt Company, who have a long history. The pitch lake in Trinidad was first documented by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1595.
Quality asphalt was also discovered in a deposit near Limmer in Germany in the 19th Century. The Limmer and Trinidad Lake Asphalt Company was founded in Fulham in 1881 and was responsible for much of the road resurfacing in England in the 20th Century. It was bought by Tarmac in 1971.
