We first met David Hamilton of Brigham Sailing Club sailing at Emmotland on the River Hull, on the footbridge above West Beck at the confluence with Frodingham Beck that makes the River Hull. It was 2018 and we were in the midst of a heatwave wandering up the river on the Rotsea side. David owns and has restored the beautiful 75 year old Brigham Sharpie, Amaryllis which he was sailing that day. Later that year we had two engaging afternoons chatting with David over lunch in The Trout Inn alongside the River – West Beck – at Wansford, learning about the fascinating history of leisure time on the River Hull. You can read more about the history of Brigham Sailing Club and the unique Brigham Scows in any Hull and East Riding library in ‘A River Full of Stories’ and on the website at this link:

Thanks to Geoff from Selby for these atmospheric images of Brigham SC in the early 60s in the gallery below. David has identified the central character in the photographs to be “Beverley” Bill Wilson, who was the official starter/time keeper who lived in the lighthouse. In the group picture, Walter Silverwood is stood far far right, Dora Clark is pictured in the hat and David Newton at the far left. Beverley Bill is being taken for a sail by skipper unknown possibly on the Brigham Scow ‘RIP’ prior to being the recipent of a beer mug.

Thanks once again to David Hamilton of Brigham Sailing Club.
